RAJKOT: For a day, entire Mount Abu donned the raiment of Hindi. Right from streets to all government establishments, paeans were sung in the name of Hindi. Actually, the Hindi fever commenced at the eve of Hindi Divas. Television channels were fervently dishing out their commitment to the beleaguered national language.
All the government and non-government congregations eulogizing the national language with unction, only to leave her in oblivion soon after! Everyone sang hymns in honour of the identity of the nation, called Hindi, albeit in English, and showed concern that those not knowing English are often left behind in competitive race.
More ridiculous concern was that those knowing Hindi are poor in IQ. It was clarified that IQ has nothing to do with language. One could excel in IQ in any language. Aryabhatt did not know any English but was one of the mathematical greats.
At Akashvani and Doordarshan station Mount Abu, the celebration was indeed with a difference. To begin with, after reading the message from the Director General, AIR, F. Sharyar, the celebration was honored with recitation of poems by Hindi greats like Makhan Lal Chaturvedi, Subhdra Rani Chauhan etc.
Instead, trying to paint pitiable condition of Hindi, all agreed that they have a duty towards this National Language, and must not only deliberate in conversation, but also in reading and writing. True, governments are doing their best, to work and encourage working in Hindi, but it is the duty of every Indian to contribute his or her might in the endeavor.
Bacon was fervently invoked. Just conversing in Hindi would not suffice. Conversing would only make one active, but to be perfect one must read, and to be exact one must write. All swore to buy and read at least one literary book in Hindi every month, and make books object of gifts for occasions that demand gifts of any sort.
